This week my class and I had to write a poem about our athletics day that we had. I managed to get it done and this is my poem.

Long Jump

It was my first jump
My heart was pounding like a galloping horse
Blobs of sweat dripped down my face
When my feet fell through the sand
LEEPT!!
Whaea Meri said that you're in the lead with 2.09 meters

This time I sprinted, sprinting like lightning
Arms sweating, legs pumping
I got near to the middle of the sand pit
I walked to the table Whaea Meri said “I got 3 meters!”

This is the one I got placed with
My  last jump
I was in 1st place
YES !!

Discus
I stepped into the ring,
a gladiator grim and dauntless.
I gripped the disc’s rim,
fingers curled firmly,
the weight of the implement
resting on the index finger
to accelerate the spin when released.

No practice swings for me,
just one deep breath
and the explosion on exhale.
Lead with the right hip, and
keep the right shoulder back
to provide the whip from those long arms.
Keep the right thumb down
to prevent the discus
from wobbling as it rises.

A note to the discus
It’s lifting,
and I fear it no more
The peace that takes its time
My affection holds no pain
Like a drop of bliss
from a fallen leaf
Or the wind of gladness
my heart beats faster
It found its way here
And I give it my all,
Yeah 3rd place!!

  1. Kia ora Kura I really liked your poem. I liked when you got into the detail of what actually happens like when you said in the long jump " my heart was pounding like a galloping horse ". But maybe next time you could add some pictures.
